HONG KONG
Hong
Kong, the Special Administrative Region of China, is a famed
tourist resort as well as one of the most important and
prosperous international markets in the world. In the Song
Dynasty, people here produced and shipped incense to other
places for selling and hence the name - Hong Kong, which
means fragrant harbor in Chinese.
Located on the seaboard in the southeast of China, Hong Kong
occupies an area of 1,090 square kilometers (about 420
square miles). It consists geographically of the Kowloon
Peninsula, Hong Kong Island, Lantau Island and Lamma Island
but administratively by Hongkong Island, Kowloon, New
Territories and Outlying Island, which includes about 230
islands of varying size. The population of Hong Kong is
approximately seven million, among which, more than 90
percent is Chinese. English and Chinese Cantonese are the
official languages; however, Mandarin Chinese is spoken by
more and more people since Hong Kong's return to motherland.
Due to the semitropical climate, spring and autumn are the
best seasons to visit Hong Kong as the weather is pleasant
with temperatures averaging 23 degrees centigrade. Summer in
Hong Kong is sweltering and humid while winter is dry and
cool, both are not the best time for travel.
Hong
Kong Island is a world-famous international business center
and shoppers' paradise. Together with Ocean Park, Victoria
Peak, Repulse Bay, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition
Center, it is the best place for shopping and amusement in
Hong Kong. Tsim Sha Tsui, Wong Tai Sin Temple, Star Ferry
and Victoria Harbor are all in Kowloon and are places where
tourists can get close to Hong Kong people's daily life and
have enjoyable excursions. New Territories is the farm belt
of Hong Kong. With fast-growing new towns like Sai Kung
Peninsula and Sha Tin, it is the new home for many local
residents who would rather get away from the bustling and
obstreperous modern regions. Tourists can appreciate another
kind of beauty of Hong Kong - the ravishing and rural
scenes.
Reputed as the Pearl of Orient, Hong Kong plays very
important roles in world trade and travel as well as
excelling in other areas of international achievement. How
can a tiny area like Hong Kong create such a great
achievements, come and see for yourself!
